Donald Trump Promises to Work with Palestinian Leader to End War and Broker Peace
The newly re-elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, spoke with Palestinian Authority (PA) leader Mahmoud Abbas, pledging to work towards ending the war, according to a statement from the Palestinian president’s office.
During the conversation, Abbas congratulated Trump on his election victory this week and wished him success as he prepares for his second term in the White House.
Abbas expressed his readiness to “cooperate with President Trump to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy,” according to the official statement from the PA.
In their phone call, Trump also expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the Palestinian leader and all relevant parties to “promote peace in the Middle East.”
Bishara Bahbah, who served as the national chairman of Arab Americans for Trump, told The Times of Israel that he spoke with Abbas shortly after the call. He described the conversation between Trump and Abbas as “remarkable.”
“They discussed the issue of peace and the urgent need to end the conflict,” Bahbah said.
Bahbah emphasized that Abbas is willing to work with Trump, despite the strained relations that marked Trump’s first term, during which Palestinian authorities severed relations with the U.S. after Washington officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“This is a different time. We are all moving forward from previous positions. It is essential to immediately end the conflicts and return to the negotiating table to achieve lasting peace,” Bahbah added.
