Trump Warns BRICS: 100% Tariffs If New Currency Threatens the US Dollar
Newly-elected US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to BRICS member nations, demanding they commit to not creating a new BRICS currency or supporting any foreign currency as a replacement for the US dollar. Trump threatened that countries failing to comply would face 100% tariffs on their exports to the United States.
“We are asking these countries to pledge that they will not create a new BRICS currency or endorse any other currency as a substitute for the mighty US dollar—or else face a 100% import tax and kiss goodbye to selling anything to the massive US economy,” Trump declared on his social media platform.
“Let them find another fool for that. There is no way BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade, and any country attempting to do so will say goodbye to America,” he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin weighed in on November 7, stating that it is still too early to discuss a unified BRICS currency and noting that member nations have not yet set such a goal.
BRICS, an international organization founded in 2006, is composed of Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa. As of this year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia have joined the group.
