“Federica Mogherini: Trump’s Victory Celebrators Will Regret It Soon”

Federica Mogherini expresses concerns about global risks after Trump's election.

Federica Mogherini, Director of the European Union Diplomatic Academy, made a statement today highlighting what she sees as the main global risks: increased tariffs, wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and human rights violations, particularly in Europe.

The former EU foreign affairs chief added that those celebrating Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election will soon realize, in just a few months, that his win will bring challenges for them.

Mogherini expressed deep concern over the impact of additional tariffs imposed on goods from certain countries and admitted she doesn’t understand the logic behind these tariffs or how they benefit global trade.

Regarding the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, Mogherini voiced her worries about how Trump’s re-election as president would affect the respect for international law.

“This will have implications in Ukraine, the Middle East, and other regions around the world. I believe he will try to follow through on what he has said,” Mogherini stated.

She also stressed her concern about ongoing human rights violations and the weaknesses in democratic systems.

“The international order based on norms and international law is simply not seen as relevant. I believe core values will have an impact across the globe, from Europe to the U.S. Human rights, the rule of law, democracy, diversity, and inclusion,” Mogherini said.

She emphasized her deep concern about not only what the American president will say but also what he will do regarding the fundamental values that have united countries within the transatlantic community.
